Ethics and Artificial Intelligence

I started working on ethical issues in AI in 2015, when Peter Millican, Mike Wooldridge, and I began a project funded by the Future of Life Institute  looking at the challenges in developing codes of ethics for AI, and which led to my book, Towards a Code of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence. There were obvious resonances with previous work I'd done in medical ethics, and in particular in issues related to the use of big data. AI presents incredibly interesting and challenging questions, not just for ethics, but for philosophy. Currently I'm working on a second book digging deeper into the nature of the ethical questions that AI brings; I'm developing a course on AI and Data Ethics for a new Masters in the Philosophy of AI at the New College of the Humanities; I'm developing a podcast on philosophy, ethics, and AI called 'Artificial Philosophy'; I'm working on two committees of AI4People; I'm a founding editor of the new journal AI and Ethics.
